Resto 36 Little Rose, Cambridge

On a rare day out from London we’d booked into Little Rose for a post-Olympic exhibition bit of scran. The exhibition was a bit of a hitch patch, being one third glorification of middle class male white Cambridge students and two thirds yawnsome academic box ticking of Good Things. With some very good art it has to be said. And shaky scholarship. But I really wish I’d left myself enough time to take a longer look at the world class permanent collection.

Anyway, food was just a short stagger across the street and I was ravenous. Sunday lunch was the order of the day and Little Rose did us proud with an excellent slather of roast beef with plenty of veg alongside and a magnificent Yorkshire pudding. Delish.

We had a table next to the window so could watch the passers-by strolling in the last of the summer’s heat. A good value bottle of claret helped the beef along and with a third of a bottle left we thought we’d have a bit of cheese for dessert. But we were informed that of cheese there was none. No cheese?! But you can keep it in a cave. And if not a cave, a fridge. For weeks. Mystifying. So we had something else not as required as cheese and pushed on to pubs good (The Alma) and bad (Grain & Hop Store).

5/10
