Resto 38 Fatto a Mano, St Martin’s Lane

In town for the tear-jerker Suore Angelica at ENO we needed a quick meal before kick off. I’d had my eye on Fatto a Mano for a while as a ground level alternative to the increasingly expensive St Martin’s canteen for post-tour eats. so this was an ideal opportunity for a test drive.

FaM is perfect for an express meal if you have an appointment with opera. The room is much bigger than it looks from the street so don’t be dissuaded if the front looks occupied. An army of servers are on hand to speed up service, all under the eye of an eagle eyed (but charming) maitre d’.

The food offer is pizza and your regular Italian sides. We took a salami and artichoke to share with a rocket side salad and a reasonably priced carafe of Vermentino. The pizza was excellent – a well assembled base and plenty of topping. At around twenty quid a head with service included this made for an excellent start to the evening. Alas, St Martin’s, your £15 for a heated up fish & chips with fizzy drink is no longer an attractive proposition in this neck of the woods.

9/10
