Resto 50 Palazzo Barberini, Rome

An afternoon in the Palazzo Barberini isn’t a bad way to pass the time with a bunch of Raphaels, Caravaggio etc etc. But for an English history buff the pleasantest part of the visit was a trio of canvases that would fit very nicely into the NG/NPG: A Holbein of Henry 8, a toff by Batoni (making me think I must visit Room 40) and, most surprisingly, Clive of India!

After all that culture I was thirsty so we checked out the caffè in the Palazzo garden. This was a beautiful spot, secluded and with a tinkle of Chopin coming from the salon of a hotel over the way. The atmosphere turned nocturne-ish as day shifted into early evening. G&Ts and nibbles went down easily as we watched the bats do their thing. One of those moments where you feel lucky to be alive.
