Resto 3, Fortnum & Mason Wine Bar, Piccadilly

Le Flâneur by Edmund White

After a hard day hitting the books in the London Library (Edmund White’s excellent The Flâneur in prep for a March Paris trip) it was time for a bit of pre-exhibition grub. We didn’t want to go too far and Al Duca is in the middle of a refurb so we opted for F&M’s Wine Bar as a bit of a change from the Jermyn Street offer.

We got there at 5 o’clock, when there was a smattering of people around. By 5.30 it was rammed! Obviously we weren’t the only hungered in the market for simple cold food and good wine. A mixed planche brought the (expected) selection of high quality meats and cheese. A bottle of home label Saffa Chenin Blanc washed that down nicely.

The service is good and the room fine, although it is essentially just a basement so you’ve only other people to look at. I wouldn’t make a trip to go there but it’s fine if you’re shopped out and want a tucked away spot for an hour.

7/10
