Restaurant 5, Caff’ del Opera, Milan

After a morning in the excellent Museo Novecento, mostly spent observing the Futurists, we need a snack before contemplating a night at the Hockey.
We were worried that Caff dell Opera (opposite La Scala) may be a tourist trap. It was but that didn’t mean that it didn’t offer good product. It did.
Most of the enjoyment of this visit was, appropriately, in the theatre of the place. On the till a tyrant of the floor, reducing miscreants waiters to worms and rattling through the bills efficiently. Behind the counter the man was a virtuoso of the meat slicer, wanging out sandwiches like bills from a busted ATM.
We took two of these. I chose well with a San Marco containing cheese, ham, salad and tomatoes. Across the way was delivered what can only be described as a tube of meat. Admittedly high quality meat encased in a wrap. We shared.
Drinks were a stiff Campari soda and a cold beer. We left content, ready to face a pretty shambolic FoH experience at the Olympic venue. They needed CdO’s manageress in charge.
7/10
