Resto 48 Il Panzerotto, Rome
Il Panzerotto, for me at least, wasn't the highlight of our stay in Rome.

The best meal of a short trip to Rome.
In town for a reunion with old school friends two thirds of the party insisted on eating before drinking. Sensible, right? especially as I had an early flight to Rome the next day. We spurned Pizza Express in favour of something local and this was a good idea. Service was friendly and the offer pretty…
We took coffee down the road at Flat White, which since I was last there in the 2010s appears to discovered that Billy Idol is C-O-O-L. Sorry kids, I was there and he was C-R-A-P. Thankfully their coffee remains superb.
Now, I can speak French and often do in France (and Belgium). But being expected to spontaneously speak it in Crouch End brought out the inner Kingsley Amis, which, to be honest, happens with greater frequency now that I've walked the earth for half a century.
So we emerged into the daylight early, peckish and under-boozed. Which was a shame.
Hazy recollection of a month ago Belgian burger.
It's a cliché but CB really is the epitome of the trad trattoria in central London, a breed that is not disappearing as much as you might think. But being in Bloomsbury it was about 20 quid more that it might have been, say, on Green Lanes. Even so, I didn't begrudge it the extra; Lamb's Conduit Street can be maddening in its Monocality but CB is keeping it real. Even if the customers aren't.
Amazing value for what we'd had food-wise but also given the attentive service and friendly atmosphere. It's almost worth making a diversion for.
It's autumn so it must be show time! This time around we're putting on a double bill by Simon A. Brown of one original play and one Edwardian classic.
Bothy is a modern chiller set in a remote Scottish bothy. Who is that banging on the door in the middle of the night? And why do they have half a bottle of whisky but no walking boots?
The Monkey's Paw is W. W. Jacobs classic telling of a careful what you wish for fable. Previously adapted by The Simpsons Simon has put his own spin on a horrific tale of magic and unintended consequences.
Show week is 30th October to 2nd November and you can get your tickets here.
