Resto 31 Leroy, Shoreditch

We’d held off for a month before visiting James’s new restaurant (he works there, I don’t mean by that that he owns it) and so it was some excitement that we showed up in Shoreditch on a freezing Tuesday lunchtime.

The room is great, what feels like it may have been an old put but stripped back and brightened up in a warm way. Since the room is asymmetrical you can hear the murmur of other diners but feel that you have your own space.

The menu is modern style bistro food. We were brought olives and bread while we mulled over how we were going to attack the order. A couple of small plates up front to share and then we both went for the same main. James had already told me that they had an interesting wine list and he was right – a Peloponnese white was delicious and very appropriate for a Mediterranean dish of stuffed courgette flowers. These came in a tempura batter that was really light. My main of trout with asparagus (after an asparagus starter, can’t get enough of the new season stuff!) and langoustine bisque put me in fish heaven. The sauce was outstanding.

We finished off the wine with a good slather of cheeses and after a chunky shot of espresso we rolled out into reality content in the knowledge the no. 1 son was in good hands.

9/10
