Resto 39 Millbank Spice, Pimlico
Regular readers will know that I’m a big fan of the trad Indian (of which the lamented Standard was the daddy, though there have been others) and so, being in Pimlico after a megaguiding day, and with the old boy in tow (the youngest having celebrated Arsenal’s latest triumph a little too hard to bother travelling) we decided to do that.
Millbank Spice is the real deal. Sitar music, plates freshly wiped before being placed on your table, dishes delivered on an antique (is 70s antique now, by the state of my knees I’m assuming so) trolley.
We took mixed starters up front then a jalfrezi and lamb karahi for main. The starters were of varying deliciousness with the stand out a pink tube of lamb straight out of the tandoor. Popadoms came with the traditional array of chutneys in deep electroplated swivel bowls. All splendid so far.
The jalfrezi had a pleasing amount of pretty much raw chili giving the soixante-huitard tear gas experience a pleasing run out. The lamb was a bit chewy (or maybe my teeth aren’t what they used to be). The star of the show was possibly the best naan I’ve ever had. A flying saucer of buttery goodness that made me wish we’d ordered two. But that would have been greedy. Draft Kingfisher and Cobra means that those who like their beer sweet or savoury are catered for.
All in all the perfect local Indian restaurant, may it live long and prosper.
8/10
