Resto 4 Restaurant Taj Mahal, Versailles

After a long day strolling around Louis XIV’s hovel we were in Versailles proper and hungry. The plan was to watch FC Versailles after a good fill, concern being that there’d be no food or drink on offer in the ground.*

The Taj Mahal looked like a home from home. They seemed to still be setting up when we stepped into the room but were happy to serve us. The menu, almost exactly, could be taken word for word from the Standard. But what’s this? No Jalfrezi?! Subtle differences became apparent. Only two dishes carried a star warning of ferocious heat and the vegetarian offer was meagre in the extreme.

We ordered pakora for the table and I went for a chicken madras. The pakora was good but four pieces between three wasn’t exactly a gut buster. The madras was good but only mildly spiced. The service was charming and the beer (kingfisher) was cold.

The RTJ was fine but next time I’m in Versailles I’ll try their rivals, The Maharajah, across the road. Oh, and make sure I know where Versailles are actually playing.

* It turned out there wasn’t any football on offer in the ground either as they’d switched the match to be played in Stade Jean Bouin! So we were denied the chance to watch the witch burners versus the surrender monkeys.

7/10
