Resto 20, Cafe Le Ballainvilliers, Clermont-Ferrand
After a morning in the excellent Basilica (top 13th St George paintings) I wanted to eat like a local. C le B definitely looked the part and we grabbed the last table on the ground floor.
The Café has been here since 1877 and it looks like they still have the original zinc, a nice touch. The set menu was brief but tempting. Endive to start was a charred hunk of the bitter stuff in a pleasantly sweet sauce. A main of chicken accompanied that nicely.

The crowd was art school types meets middle aged shoppers, all good. Running the service was a slightly frantic guy doing all FoH on his Jack but managing it well.
Star of the show was a smooth Burgundy, selected by the Old Boy to the sage approval of our waiter. At around €40 a head this was a high quality and value for money bistrot experience.
8/10
