Resto 23, Comptoir Central de Bazars, Clermont
Despite gorging ourselves at lunch we were in the market for a snack in the evening. We’d failed to get in to CCdeB the day before during to its being booked up and on entry I could see why. It’s a narrow room with one sit down table, a counter by the kitchen and a row of stools on the opposite wall. But we were there early so we got a prime position eyeball to eyeball with the kitchen action.
The maitre d’ was charm itself, indulging my half arsed French and showing James around the wine. They have a seriously good offer and we laid in one for the train home before perusing the menu for the present situation.
Tonnato Vitello was delicious and fresh. Pink slivers of meat in a not too fishy sauce. Alongside puntarello was also mega fresh and provided some welcome greens after our trad lunch. With it a chilled Carignan Red was delicious.
Within twenty minutes the room was full, very convivial. This is the kind of place that some places in Crouch End think they are. But twenty times better and two thirds the price.
A rare double 9/10 day.
Add a half for the penis soap.

9/10
