Restaurant 14, Blockbrau, Hamburg
This was our second visit to Blockbrau of the week, following a drinks only session prior to walking under the Elbe on the first day. we were drawn back to eat by the view, which is spectacular. A panorama of the river with industry on one side of the river and bustling tourist boats on the other.
The food is straightforward German with the local speciality of fried fish and herrings also on offer. I went for the fish and chips. The batter was excellent and to their credit, rather than going for one monster fillet as they do in most London pubs, the Frankfurters give you two decent sized fillets. The remoulade alongside was disappointing being not much more than a ramekin of mayonnaise. Which given that I’d opted for mayo with the chips was a bit of a may overload. But the chips were excellent, as crunchy as the batter and perfect fuel for watching 4 hours of football later that evening.
The beer was fresh and cold (they brew it on site) and the service friendly and prompt. Recommended for unpretentious, reasonably-priced dining in a wonderful location. I have much worse fish and chips for much more money in Leigh-on-Sea. And there you can only see Canvey Island.
8/10
